Standard Oil of Arizona

(Patrick Kriner)When we first traveled from Phoenix Airport on to Monument Valley, we came upon this sign for a long forgotten gas station.  We drove past it at first but then, we turned around while everyone scrambled for their gear.  Growing up in the midwest we always stopped to “tank up” at our local SOHIO station.  Standard Oil was “THE” gas stop of choice for many of our friends and family.  Today, after many acquisitions and mergers, Standard Oil is no more.  This image illustrates many things for me.  How time ravages material things.  How certain images can bring back many memories of filling up at our local filling stations where they filled your tank, cleaned your windshield, and checked your oil right around the corner from your house.  Times have changed.  But even though time takes its toll, images can be preserved and sometimes can survive the passage of time.  I hope this image brings back similar memories for you.  Somethings are gone but not forgotten.  Enjoy!
